100 panels. This same balance was not reflected in the original keynote speaker’s list. Even though the planned outcome was different, and there was never an intention to deliberately exclude any group, a male-only line-up emerged after a long process of consideration. The organisers take full responsibility for this. As soon as this gender imbalance was realised, four female keynote speakers were incorporated into the line-up.
In order to continue and intensify this debate, there will be a round-table discussion on Wednesday 23 May from 14.30 – 16.30 on ‘12.10 Diversity in the Past: Diversity in the Present? Issues of Gender, Whiteness and Class in ‘Classical’ Archaeology’. This will be co-organised by Lisa Lodwick and Eva Mol, and representatives of AIAC and the Organising Committee will be amongst those taking part. One of its aims will be to discuss proposals for diversity guidelines to AIAC for future congresses.
